Community Support of Ottawa Botanic Theme

We’ve just returned from a fabulous ‘season opener’ welcome breakfast to those of us who are volunteers for the Ottawa is Blooming campaign. What a joy to finally see our 5 year effort paying off in regards to the botanical theme instilled by Ottawa City planners. Isn’t the downtown just gorgeous??

There are three call-to-action items we would like to encourage.

#1. Help us maintain our adopted garden bed for Ottawa is Blooming Campaign

Grateful Plains Organics has applied to be assigned a specific location where we will be able to demonstrate companion planting by growing veggies, flowers and herbs all in one bed. We will need volunteers to plant, maintain and water the bed this season. If you are available to get on our volunteer list, please send us an email to info@gratefulplains.com with your name and phone number so we know who will be helping us this year. The Grateful Plains bed will be one Ottawa location for my Garden Maiden workshops held throughout the year.

#2. Plant a Row in our Community Garden Plot!

The second location for my garden therapy sessions and seasonal playshops in Ottawa will be the Community Garden Plots on Dayton Road. If you would like to volunteer to maintain the garden, you will receive produce from the garden and be responsible for surplus produce getting to friends/neighbors in need or to the Servant’s Heart office to be distributed to area food banks. If you are interested in participating in this regard, you are welcome to be part of the planning effort as to what goes in the garden. NOTE: all of our seeds are non-GMO and no chemicals will be used on our plot.

#3. Plant Zinnias this year!

Ottawa in Blooming has deemed the theme of 2014: The Year of the Zinnia. We will be planting a bed of Zinnias at the shop and extending the reach of Ottawa to the Ridge. Please do the same in your yard or at your child’s school or at your office place and share your photos with us this summer to share our enthusiasm for this inspiring botanical campaign by our neighboring city.

There are hundreds of varieties of zinnia available to plant and we will have them for sale at Grateful Plains as seed packs and as transplants!
